A tribute to the spirit of wild horses and burros

Carson City, Nevada

Craig Downer & myself, Cat Kindsfather, will be organizing the candlelight vigil in CarsonCity, Nevada. We would like it to include the smaller towns surrounding Carson City.

Many thanks to “Coma Coffee”  312 S. Carson Street in Carson City.  We will meet there between 4:oo pm and 5:00  pm for a slide presentation by our own Craig Downer.    Then we will walk across the street to the Nevada Legislative Building to hold our candlelight vigil.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on this special eve, marking the 40th anniversary of ~ The 1971 Wild & Free Roaming Horse & Burro Act.

  1. Nevada has been the home to the majority of the wild horses. Please contact me if you want to be a part of this wonderful tribute in the Carson City area. Lets light many candles from the hearts of those who love the wild horses & burros, & agree with the 1971 act. I believe the act needs a tuneup, restoration to its original intentions to fully protect them in the wild.

Lets light up the night with a large & loving glow for these beautiful animals, & let the world know who loves them.

Awesome Shirley, great to know you will be there! Perfectly stated reason for your presence. You are in the heartbeat of their protections, especially the caring of foals lost or injured. I look forward to the love light, shared with you & this group of advocates gathering in Carson.

How could I forget, but I did! The vigil is much about honoring the brilliant & loving work of Wild Horse Annie, for our beautiful wild spirits, the horses & burros. We have so much to be grateful for to her.

This vigil location is a work in progress, & still a plan.

  5. I plan on giving a little talk in honor of the wild horses and burros and the unanimously passed Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 during this vigil. I knew and worked personally with Wild Horse Annie and promise not to bore you but to really speak in honor of the spirit of this very noble and ecologically progressive, horse and burro honoring act.

To all who might be thinking of shining a light in Carson CIty for the wild horses & burros on December 15th, the 40th anniversary of the 1971 protections act, we are on. Just confirmed location as per my original plan. It will be on the sidewalk in front of the Carson City Legislative building.

Thinking of the time frame being 4:00 to 6:30, but possibly a bit shorter time, 4:30 to 6. After all, it is a winter evening! Stay posted for further details.

I have purchased battery operated tea lights for about 50 people. Donations are appreciated of course, to cover my costs, but not mandatory.

Not sure we can have open flame, but will let you know asap. One concern mentioned was, if the battery tea lights would be bright enough.
Also must check the cycle of the moon to calculate how brightly we will shine to passersby.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you shining your light on what I consider to be a sacred night ahead! Please post if you are planning to come.

Its a plan, “Comma Coffee” is letting Craig Downer have his talk about our precious wild horses & burros at their coffee house between 4 & 5 pm on December15th, just prior to the vigil, and even possibly during the vigil. He will also have a slide show presentation.

Many thanks to Comma Coffee! Of course, much appreciation to Craig as well.

Comma Coffee House ~ 312 So. Carson Street. Craig will have a talk about our precious wild ones, & the spirit of the WFRHBA.

The candlelight viigil will begin directly after Craig’s talk, or even possibly at 4:30. It would be nice if some lights pulled people into hear about them too.

Tough call on that one! I don’t want to miss a thing. ❤

If you cannot make it out to a vigil, please shine a light in your window, take a photo, and post it here!

  11. Is there anybody who can email me names of round ups this year and names of horses lost? I am following New England Area’s format and want to honor the horses who perished as well as inform peopel which herds lost their lands and where. And I cannot forget burros, if there is any info about them, please let me know and thanks in advance if you can.

    • Hi Tracy, the information you seek is definitely “out there. . . ” however, it may help you (it does me) to think of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C., because to me, each wild horse and burro is a soldier, but the difference is, it is a war they didn’t need to or choose to fight, that they often do not win, and they pay with their gentle lives, as we see, again and again.. .. we need a marker near Wild Horse Annie’s marker . . . that marks the Unknown Wild Horse and Burro, who died in multitudes at the hands of this government, Indian nations, and other agents all over the world. Our excess breeders of horses are presently creating horses that are doomed to a horrible dealth by slaughter, before they are even born, due to their numbers, and our “throw-away society.” LIght a candle for the unknown ones, and another one in hopes of a saner world for us all.

Carrol, did you edit the top comment I originally made? Because technically it is not at the Legislative Building, but on the sidewalk in front of it. We are not allowed to be on the grass or building area. Just so there is no confusion.

yes Craig will give his talk from 4 to 5pm, & then we light up the night across the street on the sidewalk. The City of Carson granted permissions. ; )
